Lanzarote is the forth largest of the Canary Islands with an area of approximately 845 square kilometers (326 square miles). It is approximately 60 by 25 kilometers (37 miles by 15 miles). The coastline is around 213 kilometers (132 miles), with 16 kilometers (10 miles) of beach. The population is around 130,000 with 55,000 living in the capital Arrecife, which is also the name of the airport.
The Timanfaya National Park, covering 51 square kilometers (20 square miles), is a favourite tourist spot. The area is very hot and volcanic, and party tricks of the tourist guides include pouring water down the vents which shoots back as steam, or throwing straw down which bursts into flame.
